Since 1996 Orbital’s direct injection technology has lead the
way as the solution to emissions compliance for outboards and personal
watercraft. In addition to lower emissions, products equipped with
OCP™ offer reduced smoke levels, improved fuel economy, smooth
running, improved throttle response and offer consistent reliable
starting under any conditions.
The marine sector, and the 2-stroke engines that have long dominated
this market, were challenged by emissions compliance requirements
introduced in the late 1990’s. These requirements include:
- United States EPA rulings for outboards
and PWCs
- Progressive emissions reduction
starting in 1998
- 70% reduction by the year 2006.
- California Air Resources Board (CARB)
accelerated requirements requiring
- 70% emissions reduction in 2001
- 77% in 2004
- 90% in 2008
OCP™ equipped 2-stroke engines, such
as Mercury’s OptiMax™ 3-Star rating models, demonstrated
the capability to meet these low emissions levels. Today, several
manufacturers have adopted OCP™ technology on their marine
products with others having evaluated its applicability to related
markets such as snowmobile and all-terrain vehicles. OCP technology
has also been applied to 4s and heavy fuel applications to address
the particular challenges of this particular product group.
