The real world performance potential of OCP™ technology on automotive 4-stroke applications has been demonstrated and independently evaluated by a number of manufacturers, engine technology companies and regulatory bodies, such as RWTÜV Fahrzeug GmbH (the technical body responsible for exhaust emissions in Germany).

Orbital's automotive 4-stroke technology demonstrator was based on a Ford Mondeo, with the original 2.0litre DOHC 4-stroke engine upgraded to include Orbital's direct injection fuel system and engine management system. The independent TÜV testing of October 1999 verified that Orbital DI was capable of meeting European Stage 4 emissions levels well in advanced of the 2005 implementation date. The testing also confirmed that a 13% improvement in fuel economy was possible over the identical vehicle fitted with a conventional multi-point fuel injection engine.

The catalyst system used to achieved these results was significantly lower in cost than that required by competing DI systems, an achievement made possible by OCP™'s superior ability to control the pre-catalyst pollutants. The reliance of competing DI technologies on complex lean NOx catalysts (LNC) and storage catalysts adds significantly to total system cost, whilst debate persists with regard to durability and susceptibility to fuel sulfur levels.
