Mercury
Marine is the world's largest manufacturer of outboard engines
and released its first commercial product using Orbital direct injection
technology in 1996. Since then, Mercury has progressively expanded
its OptiMax range to now include inline 3 cylinder and V6 models
from 75Hp to 250Hp.
The OptiMax
range of engines reduce hydrocarbon emissions by more than 70%,
already exceeding the United States' EPA requirements for the year
2006. Some OptiMax engines even feature the California Air
Resources Board's prestigious 3-Star rating, meaning that they achieve
emissions reductions of over 90%.
The lightweight 2-stroke platform means that
OptiMax is able to deliver "breathtaking acceleration
and superior top speed characteristics". Other features of
the OptiMax engine include smooth throttle response, misfire-free
running quality comparable to that of a 4-stroke, easier docking
and trolling at only 550 rpm, consistent and reliable starting in
all weather conditions, and very low engine noise.
