Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, or HCCI, is a relatively
new combustion technology. It is a hybrid of the traditional spark
ignition and compression ignition processes. However, a major obstacle
for HCCI engines is the difficulty in controlling the moment of
auto-ignition and the rate of combustion thereafter.

Where as a spark ignition engine is controlled
by spark-timing, and a compression ignition engine controlled by
amount and timing of fuel injected, conventional gasoline fuel systems
cannot adequately control HCCI combustion. Gasoline direct injection
is one of the technologies researchers are turning to for the answer.
Orbital, a leader in direct injection development
and application, is well positioned to support this emerging opportunity.
Our DI combustion know-how, advanced combustion development facilities,
streamlined analysis techniques and tools make us ideal partner
to have involved in your studies.
