ENVIROFIT AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS
WORLD CLEAN ENERGY AWARD
Envirofit, a non-for-profit
organisation developing direct injection retrofit kits for three-wheeled
taxis in the Philippines, has been awarded the prestigious World
Clean Energy Award for Transport and Mobility 2007.
The newly created
World Clean Energy Awards recognize achievement and innovation in
the integrated use of energy efficiency (regarding both supply and
demand) and renewable energy (regarding supply). The Awards provide
a showcase for new standards in applying clean and renewable energy
solutions. The focus is on implementation projects which assist
in moving from experimental and scientific research in cleaner energy
technologies to integrated, broad use of these technologies.
Envirofit, a licensee
of Orbital's technologies, has been developing the retrofit kit
over the past four years to address the air pollution problems common
in many Asian cities. The three-wheeled taxis are an integral part
of the transport system however are a major source of emissions,
given the generally old and not well maintained carbureted 2-stroke
engines used in these vehicles.
The Envirofit program has included the setting
up of local infrastructure to convert the taxi tricycles to Orbital's
DI systems and uses local sourcing where possible. Initial feedback
from taxi-drivers during fleet testing has been very positive with
the good driveability of the converted taxis and the significantly
improved fuel economy. The DI conversion kit reportedly reduces
carbon monoxide emissions by 76%, carbon dioxide emissions by 35%,
and hydrocarbon emissions by 89%. At the same time, fuel consumption
is reduced by 35% and oil consumption by 50%.
Synerject is the supplier of key components
to Envirofit for the conversion kit.
