ORBITAL PRESENTS HCCI/CAI DIRECT
INJECTION PAPER AT SAE WORLD CONGRESS
Orbital presented
a technical paper at the Annual SAE World Congress and Exhibition
being held Detroit, Michigan this week.
The SAE World Congress is the Premier Automotive
Technology Event of the SAE calendar, bringing together an expected
35,000 participants from the OEM automotive companies through to
the suppliers and the R&D houses.
The theme of the Congress is "A Climate
of Change" exploring the near and longer term automotive technologies
under development across a wide range of topics from combustion
technologies, to Powertrain alternatives including hybrids, materials,
manufacturing and looking into the automotive systems of the future.
Orbital's paper, titled "The Potential
of HCCI/CAI Control through the Application of Spray Guided Direct
Injection "publishes Orbital's recent work in this combustion
area.
Whilst Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition
(HCCI)/Controlled Auto-Ignition (CAI) has been known to offer combustion
efficiencies comparable with modern diesel along with improved emission
capability, its practical use has been limited due to the restricted
operating load/speed range and related control issues.
Orbital's investigations have shown that with
the application of air assisted spray guided injection, the HCCI/CAI
operating range can be significantly increased with a simple valvetrain.
In addition, the enhanced ability to adjust combustion from cycle
to cycle can ensure optimal operation under transient conditions,
including switches between combustion modes.
The HCCI/CAI combustion developments
are part of Orbital's continued development and enhancement of the
Orbital FlexDITM "One Engine - Any Fuel" systems.
