DEHWA REPORT RELEASED
The report "Evaluating
the Health Impacts of Ethanol Blend Petrol" prepared by Orbital
and CSIRO for the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage
and the Arts has now been released and is available on the Government
web-site:
http://www.environment.gov.au/atmosphere/fuelquality/publications/pubs/ethanol-health-impacts.pdf
(PDF 3.59MB)
The report provides data, modelling analysis
and scientific interpretation by which the human health impacts
of adopting E5 or E10 ethanol blends in petrol are estimated for
the Australian passenger vehicle fleet in Sydney and three other
major urban centres.
The results are based on a work program that
consisted of five activities:
- Measurement of Exhaust Emissions - (including
particulate matter)
- Measurement of Evaporative Emissions
- Examination of the Formation of Secondary
Organic Aerosol
- Assessment of the impacts of E5 and E10
on Photochemical Smog
- Assessment of the health impacts of E5 and
E10.
The detailed vehicle testing was carried out
by Orbital at its Perth, Western Australia facilities, with sample
speciation and analysis carried out by CSIRO.
Orbital's facilities are well suited to vehicle
fleet assessment, for both gasoline/LPG spark ignition and diesel
compression engined cars. Testing of today's emissions, calls for
both sophisticated measuring equipment and for stringent procedures
to ensure accurate measurements, especially in critical areas such
as fine and ultra-fine particulate measurement.
