EURO III LEVEL MOTORCYCLE EMISSION
LEVELS CONFIRMED FOR CHINA
The Chinese EPA have published the new Motorcycle
Emission Standards GB 14622 2007 to be introduced for new models
from January 1st, 2008 onwards.

The emission levels are based on the current
European Stage III emission standards. The introduction of these
emission standards, plus the inclusion of emission durability requirements
makes the Chinese motorcycle emission control requirement one of
the most stringent in the world. The test cycle for larger displacement
motorcycles is modified to suit the local requirements by reducing
the maximum speed in the cycle 90 kph.

As in Europe, the introduction of the more
stringent emission standards is driving the shift from carburettor
to Engine Management Systems (EMS) using Port Injection or other
electronic control of the fuel metering, especially for motorcycles
greater than 150 cc.
EMS systems enable much tighter control of
the emissions and the exhaust catalyst performance; EMS systems
also enable much better control emission capability over the vehicle
life, as called for in the China regulations (up to 30,000 kms for
performance motorcycle).
Synerject, the 50:50 Joint Venture Partnership
between Orbital and Siemens VDO is very active in China, working
with the major Chinese motorcycle manufacturers. Synerject recently
opened it's Chongqing Test and Application Engineering Centre, equipped
with dedicated state-of-the art engine and vehicle test and calibration
equipment needed to customize and calibrate motorcycle engines to
meet the legislated and customer requirements. In addition, Synerject
are now manufacturing Electronic Control Units (ECU's) in China
to support both the China domestic, and the international market.
